Maddy nodded, her heart pounding. The moment she and Rachel were away from the shop, she grabbed her friend’s arm and ducked into an alley, quickly explaining the plan. “Go for it!” said Rachel, her eyes shining.

Drawing the cat magic to her, Maddy felt the familiar tingling as she faded from view. She wasn’t a moment too soon. When she opened her eyes again, she saw the estate agent go striding past, holding a briefcase.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can!” she cried to Rachel, and darted back to Vine and Wilson’s office. Through the window she could see the other agent talking on the phone. As quietly as she could, she edged open the door and slipped invisibly inside.

“May I help—” the woman began, looking up.

She broke off, staring around the empty office in confusion. Maddy froze, suddenly feeling very visible! Finally the woman shrugged and went back to her phone call. “Never mind – I must be imagining things …”

Maddy let out a sigh of relief. “Come on,” Nibs whispered from her shoulder. “Let’s see what we can find out!”

Tiptoeing across to the empty desk, Maddy glanced over her shoulder. The estate agent was staring at her computer screen, not paying attention. Quickly Maddy opened an address book that was lying on the desk, and flipped through it. But when she came to F, there was no entry for Fletcher.

“Try the files!” hissed Nibs.

Maddy shook her head. The filing cabinets lined one wall – there was no way she could start rifling through them and not be seen! Then she saw that the computer on the desk was still on. Could she find Mr Fletcher’s email address, and contact him that way?
